The Himation is as significant to the Greeks as the Toga will become to the Romans. In fact, the Himation, a rectangle of 12 to 15 feet in length, is the ancestor of the Toga. But the Toga will be a semi-circle of fabric and grow to be much larger and longer. And because of this change in shape, it will look different when it is draped around the body. It will also incorporate a visual code which will denote the status of the wearer, indicating both age and rank through the use of colored and/or embroidered bands. |
